UACES Doctoral Training Academy 2023
Enhancing Academic Skills
UACES Doctoral Training Academy is a free annual event aimed at PhD Researchers and Early Career Researchers in the field of European Studies. Through a series of panels and interactive sessions, it provides attendees with tools and skills to navigate research and careers both in and out of academia.
This year's DTA will focus on enhancing the academic skills required to forge a successful career in academia. The event will be composed of three different interactive sessions:
Session 1 - Getting Published: Article Production and Publication
In this session, we will explore the process of producing an article for publication, with a specific emphasis on understanding the expectations of journal editors when receiving submissions from early-career scholars. The panel of experienced academics will provide their valuable insights and advice on the best approaches to navigating this publishing journey. The session includes a question and answer session, allowing early career researchers the opportunity to pose questions to an experienced panel about publishing in European studies.
Speakers: Dr Seda Gürkan (Leiden University), Dr Bruno Theodoro Luciano (Université Libre de Bruxelles / MSCA), Dr Frank Mattheis (United Nations University)
Session 2 - Creating Impact: Disseminating and Amplifying Your Research
This session aims to provide valuable insights into effectively disseminating your research findings and maximizing their impact. The panel will explore a range of opportunities for research dissemination, including both traditional and non-traditional approaches for academic and public engagement, and will consider the benefits and challenges of getting your work out there.
Speakers: Dr Patrick Bijsmans (Maastricht University) , Prof Sven Biscop (Egmont Institute), Dr Laura Luciani (Ghent University)
Session 3 - Academic Applications: Standing Out (In the Right Ways)
This session is designed to equip early career researchers with valuable information and strategies for approaching academic applications. Our panel of established academics with experience evaluating academic applications will share their expertise, shedding light on the common mistakes often made by early career researchers and offering guidance on how to avoid them. This provides the opportunity to gain valuable insights and ensure that your applications and CVs stand out for the right reasons.
This session will be split into two: first there will be a panel discussion on academic CVs, and then after a short coffee break, participants will have the option to get general feedback on CVs and talk to our panelists about applications.
Speakers: Prof Michele Chang (College of Europe, Bruges), Dr Paul Stephenson (Maastricht University, Brussels), Dr Gustavo Muller (KU Leuven)
